Hornblower Nautical Glossary

John Ward in the United States emailed Society Chairman Ludwig Heuse and said : “My wife and I are landlubbers and therefore completely at sea (pardon me, please) when it comes to nautical terminology, sailing tactics, wind-driven ships, and the like. Is there a Hornblower glossary or sailing guide (preferably with illustrations) in publication ?”

Society Editor Lawrie Brewer pointed John and Evelyn in the direction of Steve Pope’s ‘Hornblower’s Navy’ and with the help of this excellent book, plus the Hornblower Companion and a listing from Florida-based ships rigging and sails specialist Nance & Underwood, John has produced a glossary of nautical terms.

Thank you John, and we will all benefit from your interest and diligence!
