ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2012

Oriel College, Oxford 28-30 September

Members of the C S Forester Society and guests of the Swedish Horatio Hornblower Society (SHHS) assembled at Oriel College, Oxford.

Pre-AGM dinner on Friday night (with some reading from Atropos) was held at Head of the River. This charming river ‘pub’ is the location where Hornblower bought beer and food for his young family in ‘Hornblower and the Atropos’.

After breakfast and coffee at Oriel College on Saturday, a group photo was taken and we went down to  Bodleian Library for a guided tour.

The Bodleian is one of the world’s great libraries, dating back to the 14th century http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodleian_Library

Lunch was served in the impressive Hall at Oriel.

This was followed by the AGM in our venue the  Champney’s Room http://www.oriel.ox.ac.uk/content/champneys-room with a personal introduction by all attendees and formalities such as the Annual Report and election of Officers. See the Minutes of the AGM 2012

After a brief break there were four presentations.

  • Hornblower in the Baltic – Rolf Ahlström

  • Bush vs Hornblower – Dirk Scholten

  • Hornblower vs James Bond – Ludwig Heuse

  • Nurse Cavell, a Play in 3 Acts – Jetse Reijenga

Tea was served with Ship’s Biscuits provided by Tony Meyer (read his article in Reflections 23)

After dinner refreshments were served in the adjacent room, with an exhibit of Forester’s First Editions from Lawrie Brewer’s collection.

Finally the traditional Castle Pie dinner, with some reading from Hotspur  (see AGM2012_menu) was served in Champney’s Room, during which a vote was taken to choose The Ship as book-of-the-year for 2013.

On Sunday morning we did some punting on the river.
